Birds Birds Birds: An Indiana summer of birdwatching

I am lucky to have a town park and the Whitewater River at the end of my driveway. Most of our 1-acre is wooded as well. I see your typical variety of common birds, and in 2023 we decided to start feeding them. In just one month of shooting with my new telephoto lens, I caught some cool-to-me images. At the very least, Indiana Birds are practice for the big birds I hope to see in the Everglades this winter.

The Pileated Woodpecker is larger than it may seem at first glance, perhaps the size of a small cat or a squirrel. Its distinctive red crest is hard to miss, and it is quite noisy! According to the information I quickly read about this species, they typically live in pairs. Later that day, its mate was spotted further into the woods near the house, creating loud pecking sounds on a hollow tree.

This is the first time I've spotted a Woodpecker at one of our feeders. They typically don't come this close to the yard. I was only able to photograph this one from inside the house, I was just thrilled that I finally spotted one in shooting range!

The Blue Jay, with its striking blue plumage, is indeed a captivating sight in any backyard. These birds are known for their vibrant colors that stand out against the greenery, making them a popular subject for birdwatchers and photographers alike. However, their beauty is often accompanied by their raucous calls that can be mistaken for the screeching of hawks, adding a touch of drama to their presence. Blue Jays are not only visually stunning but also highly intelligent and resourceful. They are notorious for their bold behavior, often chasing away smaller birds and even squirrels to claim their territory and food sources. This competitive nature can sometimes make them a nuisance to other wildlife enthusiasts, but it also showcases their adaptability and survival instincts in the wild. Observing Blue Jays in action can be a thrilling experience due to their agility and speed. These birds are known for their quick movements and nimble flight, making them a challenge to capture in photographs or simply admire in the wild. Despite their noisy demeanor and occasional mischief, Blue Jays remain a beloved species for their unique characteristics and undeniable charm.

Although I am not very familiar with the Black-capped Chickadee, I recently captured this image and was captivated by its composition. The balanced branches and neutral colors highlight the bird's appeal to me.

The iridescent feathers of the Common Grackle are truly a marvel of nature. These feathers exhibit a mesmerizing play of colors that captivate the onlooker's gaze. Depending on the angle of the sunlight, one can observe a spectrum of hues ranging from vivid greens to deep blues and rich purples, creating a kaleidoscopic display that changes with every movement of the bird. It's as if a piece of the rainbow has been captured within each feather, making the Common Grackle a living work of art.

Moreover, the piercing yellow eyes of the Common Grackle add to its distinctive appearance. These eyes, like two orbs of golden light, stand out against the dark backdrop of its feathers, giving the bird an intense and almost enigmatic expression. They seem to hold a depth of wisdom and mystery, hinting at the secrets of the natural world that only birds can truly comprehend.

Observing a Common Grackle in the yard is not just a casual encounter with a bird; it is a moment of connection with the wonders of the avian world. The intricate beauty of its iridescent feathers and the striking gaze of its yellow eyes serve as a reminder of the extraordinary diversity and splendor that exist within the realm of birds, inviting us to pause, appreciate, and marvel at the magic of nature.

Cardinals, with their striking red plumage and distinctive crests, are a ubiquitous presence in the local landscape, often blending into the background due to their frequent appearances. Despite their commonality, these birds possess a unique beauty that deserves closer attention. The vibrant red hue of their feathers catches the eye, especially when illuminated by the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing display of color.

When these majestic creatures proudly raise their crests, they exude a sense of regal elegance that commands admiration. Observing a cardinal in its full glory, with its feathers ruffled and crest on full display, is a true testament to the magnificence of nature's creations.

Next time you spot a cardinal, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details of its appearance and the graceful presence it brings to its surroundings.

So far this year, I've also come across a Tufted Titmouse, House Sparrow, Mourning Dove and a few other super-common birds. I'm holding out for good photo opportunities before I share!
